Homatropine is used to widen the pupil before eye examination, before and after certain eye surgeries, and to treat certain eye conditions.


Typical Uses

Homatropine is used before eye examinations (e.g., refraction), before and after certain eye surgeries, and to treat certain eye conditions (e.g., uveitis). It belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. Homatropine hydrobromide works by widening (dilating) the pupil of the eye.


Side Effects

Stop using homatropine and inform your doctor if you have painful urination urinating less than usual or not at all extreme drowsiness or weakness feeling like you might pass out weak or shallow breathing, or breathing that stops feeling anxious or fearful or unusual thoughts blurred vision, burning, eye itching.


Drug Interactions

  • Homatropine+bethanechol- Talk to your doctor before using bethanechol together with homatropine ophthalmic. Combining these medications may reduce the effectiveness of one or both medications.
  • Homatropine+cevimeline- Talk to your doctor before using cevimeline together with homatropine ophthalmic. Combining these medications may reduce the effectiveness of one or both medications.
  • Homatropine+donepezil- Using donepezil together with homatropine ophthalmic may decrease the benefits of donepezil in the treatment of dementia. Donepezil may also counteract the benefit of homatropine ophthalmic. Homatropine ophthalmic should generally be avoided in patients with Alzheimer's disease or other cognitive problems. Homatropine ophthalmic may also adversely affect elderly patients by producing symptoms ranging from mild thinking impairment to delirium.
  • Homatropine+phenylephrine- Homatropine ophthalmic may increase the effects of phenylephrine on your blood pressure and heart rate. Before receiving these medications, you should let your doctor know if you have high blood pressure or heart disease. You may not be able to use one or both of these medications or you may need closer monitoring by your doctor in order to use these medications.
  • Homatropine+tacrine- Using tacrine together with homatropine ophthalmic may decrease the benefits of tacrine in the treatment of dementia. Tacrine may also counteract the benefit of homatropine ophthalmic. Homatropine ophthalmic should generally be avoided in patients with
