Details
Granisetron blocks the actions of chemicals in the body that can trigger nausea and vomiting. Granisetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting that may be caused by medicine to treat cancer (chemotherapy or radiation). To make sure granisetron is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have heart disease a heart rhythm disorder a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome an electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood) or if you have recently had stomach or intestinal surgery.
Typical Uses
Granisetron is used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by cancer drug treatment (chemotherapy). It works by blocking one of the body's natural substances (serotonin) that can cause vomiting.
Side Effects
Inform your doctor if you experience some side effects of granisetron such as fast or pounding heartbeats chest pain severe dizziness increased blood pressure-severe headache, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, shortness of breath or high levels of serotonin in the body-agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of coordination, fainting.
Drug Interactions
- Granisetron+5-hydroxytryptophan- Using granisetron together with 5-hydroxytryptophan can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Severe cases may result in coma and even death.
- Granisetron+alfentanil- Using granisetron together with alfentanil can increase the risk of a rare but serious condition called the serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, excessive sweating, shivering or shaking, blurred vision, muscle spasm or stiffness, tremor, incoordination, stomach cramp, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Severe cases may result in coma and even death.
- Granisetron+apomorphine- Using granisetron and apomorphine is not recommended. Taking these drugs together can cause symptoms of feeling light-headed, loss of consciousness, chest pain or heavy feeling, or tremors.
- Granisetron+clozapine- Using clozapine together with granisetron can increase the risk of an irregular heart rhythm that may be serious and potentially life-threatening, although it is a relatively rare side effect. You may be more susceptible if you have a heart condition called congenital long QT syndrome, other cardiac diseases, conduction abnormalities, or electrolyte disturban
