Furazolidone is used to treat bacterial and protozoal infections. It works by killing bacteria and protozoa (tiny, one-celled animals). Some protozoa are parasites that can cause many different kinds of infections in the body. Furazolidone is taken by mouth. It works inside the intestinal tract to treat cholera, colitis, or diarrhoea caused by bacteria, and giardiasis. Furazolidone is sometimes given with other medicines for bacterial infections. Certain foods, drinks, or other medicines may cause very dangerous reactions, such as severe high blood pressure, when taken with furazolidone.
Typical Uses
Furazolidone is used to treat infections which are protozoal or bacterial. These types of infections are affected by many different parts of the body and may have symptoms like diarrhoea or inflammation. This drug works by destroying the miniscule, one cell organisms that cause the infection. The medicine accesses the intestinal tract to treat the side effects of cholera, diarrhoea, colitis or giardiasis. It may be used either on its own or in combination with other medicines to enhance its benefits.
Side Effects
Some of the side effects of Furazolidone include stomach pain abdomen pain, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, headaches, changes in urine colour, fever symptoms, sore throat or skin rash.
Mechanism of action
Furazolidone belongs to class of medications called nitrofuran antibiotics. Furazolidone is believed to work by cross linking of DNA, thereby stopping bacterial growth and killing sensitive bacteria and protozoa.
