Fosinopril is ACE inhibitors. ACE stands for angiotensin converting enzyme. Fosinopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) or heart failure. To make sure fosinopril is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis) liver disease a connective tissue disease such as Marfan syndrome, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis if you are on a low-salt diet or if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction. Fosinopril can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.

Typical Uses

Fosinopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. It is also used to treat heart failure. Fosinopril is an ACE inhibitor and works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily. This medication may also be used to help protect the kidneys from harm due to diabetes.

Side Effects

Common side effects of fosinopril include a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, sore throat, painful mouth sores, cough, trouble breathing little or no urinating or high potassium (slow heart rate, weak pulse, muscle weakness, tingly feeling).

Drug Interactions

  • Fosinopril+aliskiren- Using aliskiren together with fosinopril may increase the risk of serious side effects such as kidney problems, low blood pressure, and high potassium levels in the blood. High levels of potassium can develop into a condition known as hypercalcemia, which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.
  • Fosinopril+amiloride- Using fosinopril together with amiloride may increase the levels of potassium in your blood (hypercalcemia), especially if you are dehydrated or have kidney disease, diabetes, heart failure, or if you are an older adult. Hypercalcemia can cause symptoms such as weakness, confusion, numbness or tingling, and uneven heartbeats.
  • Fosinopril+candesartan- Using fosinopril together with candesartan may increase the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure, kidney function impairment, and a condition called hypercalcemia (high blood potassium). In severe cases, hypercalcemia can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. You may be more likely to develop hypercalcemia while taking these medications if you are elderly, dehydrated, or have kidney disease, diabetes, or advanced heart failure.
  • Fosinopril+leflunomide- Leflunomide may cause liver problems, and using it with other medications that can also affect the liver such as fosinopril may increase that risk. Because leflunomide can stay in your blood for a prolonged period after the last dose, interactions with other drugs may occur for some time even after you have stopped taking it

Mechanism of action

Fosinopril is an antihypertensive drug that belongs to a class of medications called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It works by inhibiting the action of ACE which results in lowering of high blood pressure and improving blood flow to the heart.
