Test details and preparation:
- Aldolase is an enzyme that helps convert glucose into energy. It is found throughout the body but is primarily found in high levels in muscle tissue.
- Aldolase levels are elevated in the bloodstream when a person has muscle damage, the aldolase blood test may be ordered to diagnose and monitor certain conditions related to skeletal muscle or liver damage.
- Today aldolase test has been `changed by other specific disease, which are:
- Creatine kinase
- Alanine aminotransferase
- Aspartate aminotransferase
- The test can be ordered when any person show symptoms of muscle dystrophy such as:
- Frequent falls.
- Difficulty getting up from a lying or sitting position.
- Trouble running and jumping.
- Waddling gait.
- Walking on the toes
- Large calf muscles.
- Muscle pain and stiffness.
- Learning disabilities.
- The test is done by taking a blood sample from the vein using a needle.
- No such preparation is needed for the test.
Results:
- The normal reference range for aldolase test are:
- Age 0-2 years: < 16 U/L
- Age 3-16 years: < 8 U/L
- Age 17 years and older: < 7.5 U/L
- Higher or abnormal level of aldolase may indicate certain health conditions, which are:
- Muscle damage
- Dermatomyositis
- Viral hepatitis
- Cancers of the liver, pancreas, or prostate
- Muscular dystrophy
- Heart attack
- Polymyositis
- Leukemia
- Gangrene
- Hyperaldolasemia
